a picture may be worth a thousand words, but give me a thousand words and I'll tell the full story.

I'm Carmen, a Canadian freelance writer telling tales about creating, exploring and protecting the natural world. I split my time between British Columbia’s Coast Mountains and Slovenian’s Soča River Valley. I’m a brunet in a family of blondes, a fish in the mountains and a bird underwater.

Passionate about print media, I am a regular contributor for Sidetracked Magazine (UK), BASE Magazine (UK), Mountain Life Magazine (CAN), Coast Mountain Culture (CAN) and Paddling Magazine (CAN). I write online content for NRS Duct Tape Diaries (US) and Pyranha Kayaks (UK).

Previously, I have written for Teton Gravity Research, and Outside.com and have done multiple podcasts for The Dirtbag Diaries. I was the editor of Kayak Session Magazine and a staff writer for Paddling Magazine. Presently, I have a column in Mountain Life Magazine (CAN) where my words and watercolours run together teaching skills to folks who aren’t afraid to put down the phone and get their hands dirty.

In addition to storytelling I also provide proofreading services, write social media and website content, and deliver customized communication coaching for various international organizations and projects. I currently manage communications for two nature conservation projects - one based in the Balkans and the other in the Caucasus.

Available for freelance assignments or communications contracts.

a story should lure the reader in, let them get lost, give them time to  question themself,

then leave a sparse trail of breadcrumbs to find their way out.

that’s the full story.
